The Philippines Starts the Ban on Trans Fat in Pre-packaged Processed Food Products

The use of trans fat in pre-packaged food products is now banned in the country starting Monday, June 19. This policy was implemented to address the high consumption of trans fat, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease and other diseases.
Based on the orders issued by the Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration in 2021, processed food products containing trans fatty acids are prohibited from being manufactured, imported, and distributed for commercial sale after June 18.
To note on the specific products banned, per FDA Circular 2021-028, the manufacture, trading, importation, distribution, and sale of the following shall be prohibited:
  1. PHO (Partially Hydrogenated Oil) to be consumed alone or used in the preparation of processed food products;
