EFSA: ‘Titanium Dioxide (E171) No Longer Considered Safe as A Food Additive’

Based on a concern for TiO2 particles’ potential genotoxicity, and Titanium Dioxide (E171) is no longer considered safe as a food additive. EFSAの experts no longer consider titanium dioxide safe when used as a food additive. This means that no amount of E171 should be considered under the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels.

Titanium dioxide (E171) is authorized as a food additive in the EU as a coloring agent to make food more visually appealing. It is also present in cosmetics, paints, and medicines.

The main food categories contributing to dietary exposure of E171 are fine bakery wares, soups, broths, sauces, and processed nuts.
