FDA in Ghana has published a regulation in order to regulate the safety of toothbrushes. The regulation took effect from the 1 September 2021. According to the new regulation, toothbrushes are now classified as class I medical devices.

The types of toothbrushes to be regulated include manual toothbrushes, powered toothbrushes (battery and electric), specialized toothbrushes (Interdental brush), chewable toothbrushes, and all other forms of toothbrush (chewing stick and chewing sponge).

The standard makes provision for the Classification of different types of toothbrushes and the materials permitted for use for the handles and stock, brush, and fastening. The new regulation also provides a standard to classify toothbrushes into three categories, low, medium, and high-risk.
