Sesame Becomes Ninth Major Allergen in the US

President Joe Biden signed legislation declaring sesame a significant food allergen. After dairy, soy, wheat, peanuts, eggs, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish, sesame becomes the 9th major food allergen in the US. From Jan 1, 2023, all products using sesame seeds or items derived from them will have to be explicitly labeled.

Sesame has also been recognized as a major food allergen in Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
