On 14 July, following the publication of the results of the hazard and risk assessment of aspartame, ANVISA re-published the news and its statement about it.
It is worth recalling that on 13 July, WHO published the results of the hazard and risk assessment of aspartame. Evaluations carried out by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified the sweetener as possibly carcinogenic (i.e. capable of causing cancer) for humans (IARC Group 2B), but the Joint Committee of Experts on Food Additives of the Organization for Agriculture and Food (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives – JECFA) considered the current daily intake limit (40 mg/kg body weight) safe.
ANVISA indicates that, so far, there is no change in the safety profile for the consumption of aspartame, so ANVISA said that the agency will continue to follow closely the advances of science on the matter; and recalled that there are no new recommendations approved by WHO.
