On 22 April 2021, EFSA published Part 2 of its guidance on date marking and related food information. This was adopted on 10 March 2021 by EFSA’s Panel on Biological Hazards, and forms the second part of the EFSA Scientific Opinion which the first part was published on date marking on 2 December 2020.
This guidance focuses on consumer information on foods storage conditions, time limits for consumption after opening and thawing practises. The guidance contains a decision tree to assist food businesses in deciding whether additional information around storage conditions and time limit for consumption after opening the package is appropriate. Best practices for thawing of foods are also presented. This tool will help to decide whether to use “best before” or “use by” for a food product.
Date marking gives a useful guide on how long food can be kept before it begins to deteriorate or become unsafe to eat. Clear information on packaging is also an important part in tackling the EU’s food waste.
