India Updates Food Additives Regulations Covering Sweeteners

On 30 July 2021, the FSSAI published their latest amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives), this amended will be recorded as the Third Amendment Regulation 2021.

Food Business Operators (FBO’s) will need to comply with the new amended Regulation by 1 February 2022. The Amendment includes changes to Sweeteners and can be found on page 31 of the Regulation amendment. The amendment now defines the terms caloric and non-caloric sweeteners.

The Amendment notes that the sweetener Alitame is not permitted in foods from certain food categories:

1.1.2 Dairy based drinks,
1.8 Dairy based dessert,
2.4.1 Cocoa based spreads,
4.2.1.5 Jams, jellies and marmalades,
5.1.4 Imitation chocolate,
5.2, 5.3 Chewing Gum,
5.4 Decorations,
11.4 Other sugar and syrups,
11.6 Table top sweeteners,
12.5 Soups and broth,
14.1.4 Water based flavoured drinks.
