On May 12, 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (MAFF) announced a draft JAS (Japan Agricultural Standard) for ‘Processed foods suitable for vegetarians or vegans’.
The draft JAS includes three categories of Vegetarian foods and one category of Vegan food as below.
- Vegan – food products containing no animal-derived ingredients.
- Lacto Vegetarian – food products containing no animal-derived ingredients, except for dairy, honey, and lanolin.
- Ovo Vegetarian – food products containing no animal-derived ingredients, except for eggs, honey, and lanolin.
- Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian – food products containing no animal-derived ingredients, with the exception of dairy products, eggs, honey, and lanolin.
The public hearing ended by June 10, 2022.
