The European Commission (EC) published and shared a report on the use of nanomaterials in cosmetics and a review of the cosmetics regulatory framework with the European Parliament.
The report’s main findings are as follows:
- Every day, approximately 10 new such cosmetic products are placed on the EU market; this represents only a small fraction (between 1.2% and 1.5%) of the total number of new products.
- The most common product categories associated with a cosmetic containing nanomaterials are: sun protection, nail varnish/nail make up, oxidative hair care, foundation and lip care products and lipstick.
- Most EU citizens consider it important to be informed about the presence of nanomaterials in the end products they buy, digital labelling could be considered to complement and further improve the labelling of nanomaterials in cosmetic products.
The report also mentioned that aligning the nanomaterials definition of the Cosmetics Regulation with a horizontal definition could increase coherence between legislation but should be thoroughly assessed in order to evaluate its potential effects.
