EU Parliament Thinks of Tightening on Plastic Packaging

Sandwich Inside Plastic Food Package
Further tightening on plastic packaging, especially ultra-light bags, with reduction targets at the EU level, ban on Pfas in food packaging, removal of reuse targets for takeaway food and drinks with the exemption for all micro-enterprises at the EU level. These are the priorities indicated by the rapporteur of the European Parliament on the regulation for the reduction of packaging, Frederique Ries.

The report was presented to the Environment Committee. Ries also proposes that online service providers should be bound by the same waste collection responsibility obligations as manufacturers.

For the MEP, the regulation should also contain a 90% separate collection target for 2029 for all types of packaging covered by the legislative proposal and no longer just for plastic drink bottles under the single-use plastics directive. According to the indicative timetable, the vote in the committee is scheduled for September, with the European Parliament expected to vote on its negotiating position in the plenary in October.
