EU: Technical Requirements for Small Particles Including Nanoparticles in Food And Feed Products

On 3 August 2021, EFSA published its Guidance on Technical Requirements on Regulated Food and Feed Product Applications to establish the presence of small particles including nanoparticles.

The guidance defines the criteria for assessing the presence of a fraction of small particles and sets out information requirements for applications in the regulated food and feed product areas (e.g. novel food, food/feed additives, food contact materials, and pesticides).

Nanoparticles and nano-level food raw materials are currently one of the hotspots in the research of novel food raw materials. They mainly include biological macromolecules such as proteins or enzymes and other biological materials of unknown origins.

At present, there are few regulations for the safety evaluation of nano-level food raw materials. This document has guiding significance for the safety evaluation and review of new nano-level food raw materials.
