The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has proposed new regulations requiring mandatory allergen labeling on alcoholic beverages under its jurisdiction, aligning with broader food safety and transparency efforts.
Under the proposed rule, labels must disclose the presence of major food allergens, including milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, soybeans, and sesame, as well as any ingredients containing protein derived from these allergens. Certain exceptions may apply, but the overall goal is to enhance consumer awareness and safety.
TTB has suggested a five-year compliance period from the publication of the final rule in the Federal Register, allowing industry stakeholders sufficient time to adjust labeling practices.
This proposal marks a significant shift toward greater ingredient transparency in the alcoholic beverage industry, aligning with existing food labeling regulations while ensuring consumers have the necessary information to make informed choices.
For further details, industry members are encouraged to review the full proposal once published in the Federal Register.
