The Internal Market and Environment committees of the EU Parliament have adopted their position on the draft Green Claims Directive, marking a significant step in combating deceptive environmental marketing practices.

This directive defines evidence standards, verification processes, and penalties for companies making false claims.

Proposed measures include mandatory verification before using claims, expedited approval for simpler claims, and penalties such as exclusion from procurements and fines up to 4% of annual turnover. Set for a vote in March 2024, the directive aligns with the EU’s commitment to curb greenwashing and introduces stringent regulations for transparent and valid green claims.
