On 8 June 2021, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies passed a bill authorizing the legalization of the cultivation of cannabis for medical, veterinary, scientific, and industrial purposes. For final entry into force, the bill still needs to await for the approval of the Senate.
Although the new law will legalize cannabis cultivation, it will actually impose a series of restrictions. Only companies, patient associations and non-governmental organizations are allowed to plant cannabis. If the text is finally approved in its current form, personal cultivation will still be illegal in Brazil.
