European Commission Authorises Novel Food Ingredient 3-Fucosyllactose (3-FL) for Use in Infant Foods and Formula

The European Commission has authorised the placing of 3-Fucosyllactose (3-FL) on the European Market as an authorised novel food ingredient, the ingredient itself is obtained by microbial fermentation with a genetically modified strain of Escherichia coli.

3-FL is intended to be used as a novel food ingredient in unflavoured pasteurised and unflavoured sterilised, including UHT treated milk products, flavoured and unflavoured yoghurts, beverages such as flavoured, energy drinks, sports drinks, infant formula and follow on formula for infants. The authorisation of 3-FL as a novel food ingredient also includes conditions of permitted use and labelling requirements, along with population groups in which were omitted from the novel food authorisation and application.
