On 23 Aug 2021, the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology has published its ‘General Rules for Plant-Based Foods’.

The new general rules specify the definition, basic requirements, and labeling requirements for plant-based foods. The rules also state that the product name of a plant-based food can be the same as the name of the corresponding animal food. Meantime, the labeling should always include words such as plant, plant-based, plant protein, or plant source, to indicate to the consumer of the plant-based properties of the product.
