HMRC Provides Updates Guidance on UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax

Sandwich Inside Plastic Food Package
HMRC have published an updated guidance document and webinar to tackle questions and concerns on the Plastic Packaging Tax.
Businesses that manufacture or import ten or more tonnes of plastic packaging within a 12-month period, may need to register for the tax.
Many food businesses in the UK have already started the process of evaluating their packaging and making switches to packaging which is not covered by the Tax, but ultimately most businesses will be forced to absorb costs instead of passing them onto UK consumers who are already suffering from the rising cost of food and drink prices due to inflation.
The UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax comes into force from 1 April 2022. Food businesses may be charged a rate of £200 per tonne of plastic waste.
